Osteoporosis can cause bones to become weaker or more fragile. Osteoporosis patients are more likely to fracture their bones in the hip, spine, or upper arm. This is because their bodies’ bone regeneration is not able to keep pace with normal bone loss.

Unfortunately, osteoporosis can only be managed but not treated. Most agree that osteoporosis can be treated but not cured for those who live at home and aren’t under the care of a doctor.

According to the Washington Post, 14.1 million Americans aged 50 or older (about 13%) are at risk of developing osteoporosis. According to the U.S., osteoporosis is more common among older women than in men. It can be found between 27% and 6%. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In this article, we discuss living with osteoporosis and how it affects seniors’ lives.

There are many factors that can increase your chances of developing the disease. Here are some ways to reduce your risk of osteoporosis.

Risk factors

According to the Mayo Clinic, there are certain factors that could increase your osteoporosis risk:

  • Diet. Eating disorders and low calcium intake can all contribute to a poor diet.
  • Hormone levels. Too many thyroid hormones or low sex hormones could be a problem. Overactive adrenal glands and parathyroid dysfunction are also factors in osteoporosis.
  • Lifestyle choices. High levels of alcohol, smoking, and sedentary living can increase your risk.
  • Conditions that are medically considered
  • Personalities. This disease is more common in older people, particularly women. The disease is more common in Asian and white women. People with a history of the disease or those with a smaller body are also at higher risk.
  • Steroid hormones. These medications can cause bone-rebuilding problems, such as seizures, cancer, gastric reflux, or other conditions.

Treatments for Osteoporosis

There are many treatment options for osteoporosis, including hormones, medication, and exercise.

Here are five steps to help combat the disease.

  • Daily intake of vitamin D and calcium
  • Regular exercise is important, with a focus on weight-bearing exercises and muscle-strengthening regimens
  • Stop smoking and reduce alcohol consumption
  • Discuss a bone density test with your doctor.
  • If necessary, take an osteoporosis medicine
